Snacks for Dogs

Are you wondering what some good snacks for dogs are? You might just be surprised.

What you feed your Doodle is so very important. Of course, most of your Doodle’s diet should be high quality dog food that meets your Doodle’s nutritional needs. But, just like your favorite snack gives you a little pick-me-up, Doodles love a fun snack as a training reward or a treat to brighten their day. Snacks can be a valuable part of your Doodle’s nutritious, well-balanced diet if they are thoughtfully and moderately given. Below we have compiled a list of five fresh and fun snacks for dogs.

Snacks For Dogs

Here are 5 fun and healthy snacks to consider adding to your Doodle’s snack repertoire:

  • Apples – Apples are a wonderful source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and antioxidants. They are juicy, crunchable, and low in calories. They even help remove residue from your Doodle’s teeth. Always be sure to remove the core, stem, and seeds of the apple – besides being a choking hazard, the seeds contain a small amount of cyanide which is harmful in large amounts.
  • Blueberries – These little gems are high in fiber and are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals. You can serve them fresh, frozen, or even pureed and mixed in with peanut butter and frozen in your Doodle’s Kong toy!
  • Watermelon – Made of mostly water, watermelons are a juicy, refreshing snack for your Doodle especially when the days get warmer. It’s fortified with lots of nutrients including potassium and vitamins A, B-6, and C. Make sure you share only the flesh of the watermelon – the seeds can lodge in the intestinal tract and cause a blockage and consuming the rind can cause an upset stomach.
  • Pumpkin – A spoonful of plain, canned pumpkin puree is a delightful addition to your Doodle’s food bowl. Rich in beta-carotene and other nutrients, pumpkin is excellent for helping with mild diarrhea and constipation, and most Doodles love the taste.
  • Green Peas – Great as training treats or little nibbles, fresh or frozen green peas are fantastic sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Best Snacks for Dogs

As you introduce one of these new foods to your Doodle’s diet, begin with one or two bite size amounts and observe your Doodle looking for an upset stomach or change in behavior. If the food settles well, and your Doodle enjoys it, feel free to use it in moderation as a fun and healthy snack!

Be careful to make sure that other “fresh and fun” snacks are not dangerous to your Doodle’s health. For instance, cherries, grapes, raisins, and more are possible sources of poisoning for your dog. Check here to see a list of snacks/foods NOT to feed your dog.
